Photovoltaic Solar's exponential growth

A recent Pure Advantage article by Chris McArthur – Strategic Account Manager for Enphase Energy in New Zealand, says that “In order for solar PV to solve the world’s energy problems, it must be able to compete with fossil fuels, and therefore it must be economic.

In an attempt to meet this challenge, the largest economies in the world have invested heavily in the technology, resulting in a dramatic fall in solar prices over the past two decades. The cost of Solar Photovoltaics has dropped from US$76 a Watt in 1977 to US$0.63 a Watt in 2015. It is growing exponentially with a doubling of capacity every 2.4 years. The electricity that solar PV can generate on your roof is now cheaper than the electricity you can buy through your meter. It’s no surprise that New Zealanders are now clambering to put solar on their roofs.”

At SkySolar we obviously would be the first to leap up and down about Solar Photovoltaics and the industry growth around the world being a positive thing, but just imagine if you were a fossil fuel led business right now, what a scary future that lies ahead. Imagine if you were a taxi company trying to compete with Uber, or an online travel agent trying to compete with AirBnB. These technologies and systems that double in size every year are freight trains that change the way we live our lives for the better, they make doing the same things we do in day to day life achievable through vastly different systems and providers.

Chris McArthur also talks about energy storage in his article, saying “Until battery prices fall further, the most cost-effective scenario is to maximise self-consumption with solar” and we couldn’t agree more. PowerBOS is our way of maximising the amount of electricity you consume being provided by your solar photovoltaic system by programming power use upon power generation.
