A town council in North Carolina rejected plans to rezone land for a solar farm after residents voiced fears it would cause cancer, stop plants from growing and suck up all the energy from the sun.

Two citizens reportedly made the allegations at a Woodland Town Council meeting in Northampton County, northeastern North Carolina, on Wednesday. Full article here.

They were afraid the solar farm would suck up all of the suns energy in the area.

They were afraid the solar farm could hinder photosynthesis – the process of converting light energy from the sun into chemical energy for fuel in the area and stop plants from growing.

They were afraid of solar panels causing cancer.

They feared the effect it would have on the price of their homes.

Irrational fear overcoming what would have been a smart decision for the local economy and environment is such a watse.

Here folks, are some facts:

The only sunlight used is that which falls on the panels directly. Panels don’t draw in additional energy.

Solar panels have no moving parts, and the energy they generate and deliver to either microinverters or standard inverters for either immediate use, storage, or exporting to the local grid is the same electricity we surround ourselves with everyday. Cancer is caused by many things, but solar panels aren’t one of them.

No trees, plants, animals, water supplies or any other natural occurence around the site would have been affected by the solar panels, as they don’t produce any pollution or waste products.

Photovoltaic power units actually increase the value of homes. Most clever people see it as a badge of honour.
